1:1 Template

1:1s are important - they provide time for the manager to gather and share information, coach and learn. They're often my favourite moments as a manager - getting jolted to recognition by the insight that a report gives you or being there for someone when they're struggling. I don't use fancy tools for 1:1 note keeping, I just try and listen. I find typing helps me to focus on listening and not speaking, and allows space for natural pauses in conversation. As I type I also have room to structure thoughts and form questions - a form of active listening. The written record you build over time acts as a record of the relationship and provides space to collaborate and reflect (the notes are always a shared record).

DD MM 202X

  • Pulse check: what’s on your mind?
  • Kick Off 1:1
  • Brag Document

What are 1:1s for?

  • Helping to unblock you
  • Helping focus and prioritise
  • Feeding back in the moment, as and when - reaffirming great behaviour and giving feedback as and when we see the behaviour
  • Coaching, used as a tool to guide and encourage performance & development

Prompts

If you’re getting stuck, here’s some ideas of what we can talk about:

  • What have you learnt since we last met?
  • Are the priorities of your team right?
  • Are you blocked by dependencies on others?
  • Are you working on anything that feels unimportant or unproductive?
  • What are we not doing that you wish we would do?
